One source of the frustration we experience in this life is the believe that the here and now is disconnected from the future glory. Solomon reminds us, in Ecclesiastes 9, that the more we live now as if His glory were here, the more satisfaction and fulfillment we will experience.
On the surface, I believe we all can agree, the book of Ecclesiastes is kind of depressing. It sounds like the Preacher got off the wrong side of the bed. And for many of us, us driven and creative and result-oriented people, the statements of the book can drive us crazy with all the limitations it seems to put in our attempts and desire to change the world.
Is it all really vanity???
But what the book is doing is providing the right perspective, for this life and for the one that will come. With all our resources and abilities we will never be able to take God’s place, that is what the book says. We are very capable, yes, but we do not know our time, we do not know what the Triune God of the Universe knows, and this place will never, never, never be like being with Him in glory.
Surprisingly, Solomon says that once we come to understand and believe the truth and the reality of His lordship, then we will be free to attempt to enjoy a little taste of what is going to be like once we enter eternity.
Solomon is actually telling us we can – we should – pursue satisfaction, now.
Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.Ecclesiastes 9:9,10
The secret? Live now as if His kingdom had come already. Live now as if He was the lord over everything and everyone.
Because He is.
Such a life has two characteristics:
- It acknowledges He is the LORD; it is certain of His lordship.
- It is thankful for His generosity
Then – and only then – we will be able to really try to do whatever our hand finds to do, and we will want to do it with all our might because we will know that, no matter the results, our place in glory with Him is secured… by Him.
What is your motivation to do whatever your hand finds to do? What are the limitations for you to do so with all your might?
