Control over our plans is an illusion. We cannot determine even the time when things will happen. But He is in charge! He is the One who created everything beautiful, and to what He has done nothing can be added or taken from it. Want to see evidence of this? Look into your own heart.
Declaring there is a time for everything under the Sun may not be shocking, really. The surprise comes from the declaration that we are not in charge of that timing; the Triune God of the Universe is.
Here we are, running and fighting, and working really hard, and planning and plotting and desiring and crying. Here we are moving and shaking things according to our plan for world domination… not even in charge of when everything takes place.
It is not that we are industrious, no, that’s not the problem. Since “he has put eternity into man’s heart” (Eccl.3:11), then, it’s just natural we get all busy. The problem comes from not knowing the first and the last part of that verse, “He has made everything beautiful,” – the job that matters is done – and “… he (man) cannot find out what God has done from beginning to end.”
See our problem? Because we buy the lies of our enemies (mainly our own sin, but also satan and the world), we believe the timetable for everything is ours to establish, we believe we can make something eternally beautiful, we believe we can know everything, from beginning to end.
But Jehovah, being the only completely Other God there is, allows us to rejoice in our work, here and now. How? By revealing Himself to us, telling us our condition without Him, and showing us what He has done about it. Within this context (reality), we can give ourselves away in a generous way, not to add anything to what He has done, but to bless others and to join in the declaration of His uniqueness.
How strongly do you hold to the idea that you are in charge? How much do you believe that you can either add something to the beauty He has created already, or that you will know what God has done, from beginning to end? What give you joy in your work? Confess and celebrate accordingly.
